Boxer Ryan Garcia denies using performance-enhancing drugs
Garcia tested positive for ostarine twice before his upset win over Devin Haney
Garcia says he has never taken steroids
NEW YORK (AP) — Boxer Ryan Garcia denied using performance-enhancing drugs in a video posted on social media Wednesday.
Garcia tested positive for the PED ostarine the day before and the day of his upset win over Devin Haney, according to a VADA letter obtained by ESPN.
“I’ve never taken a steroid in my life,” Garcia said in the video. “I’ve never taken any banned substance, ever.”
Garcia said he is “not a cheater” and that he is “clean.”
“I’ve been tested over 50 times in my career and I’ve never failed a test,” Garcia said. “I’m a clean athlete and I always will be.”
Garcia’s positive tests could put his boxing career in jeopardy. Under the World Boxing Council’s anti-doping rules, a boxer who tests positive for a PED can be suspended for up to four years.
Garcia is scheduled to fight Javier Fortuna on July 16.
