Charlotte Dujardin Withdraws from 2024 Olympics

Dressage Star Announces Decision Amidst Controversy

London, UK - January 17, 2023

Charlotte Dujardin, one of the world's most renowned dressage riders, has withdrawn from the 2024 Olympic Games. The British athlete, who is Britain's joint-most decorated female Olympian, made the announcement following a controversy surrounding a video that appears to show her excessively using a whip on her horse during training.

In a statement, Dujardin expressed her disappointment at not being able to compete in Paris, but emphasized her commitment to animal welfare. "I am deeply saddened to have to make this decision, but I believe it is the right one for my horse and for the sport of dressage," she said.

The video, which was released by a whistleblower, has sparked an investigation by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). The FEI released a statement saying it "strongly condemns the use of excessive force on horses" and is "committed to the welfare of all horses in equestrian sport."

Dujardin's withdrawal is a significant blow to the British equestrian team, which had high hopes of success in Paris. She and her horse, Valegro, won gold medals in both the individual and team dressage events at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

The controversy surrounding Dujardin's use of the whip has raised questions about the ethics of equestrian sports and the treatment of horses in competition. The FEI has vowed to review its rules and regulations to ensure the welfare of horses is protected, and Dujardin's withdrawal serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible horsemanship.
